Sharon Jakubecy

Position: Associate Faculty Member
Classes Taught: ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
Education: Sharon studied Modern Dance and Cognitive Science at UC San Diego. She discovered that she could not be a doctor or a scientist because she had to dance and perform. During her explorations of how the body is built to move, she found the Alexander Technique and, in 2003, became an AmSAT certified teacher after three years of training.
Professional Experience: Sharon teaches the Alexander Technique to actors at XRTC, Stella Adler Studio, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She has offered workshops for LA Opera, Children’s Hospital, Unknown Theater, and Vox Humana to name a few. Privately she coaches singers, musicians, writers, teachers, filmmakers, and doctors to move with poise and less stress. While training, and then, teaching the Alexander Technique, Sharon has danced and choreographed for theater in San Diego and Los Angeles. She has choreographed for LA Valley College, “Cabaret” at Stella Adler, “The Next Wave: Up and Coming Choreographers in Los Angeles.”
What the XRT Means To Me…: When I first walked into Location X, before I knew anything about the Intensive Program or the artists that work, teach, and perform here, I could feel the energy of XRTC. It was palpable. Each member is inspired and enthusiastic about their community and their art. I wanted to be a part of this dynamic collective that seeks to nurture the artist and foster creative truth.
Why I Do What I Do…: The Alexander Technique helps actors to release interfering tension that diminishes their stage presence, their openness, and their own dynamic truth. I teach the Alexander Technique because it helps performers to tap into their own sense of poise and ease, allowing their full expression to flow from a free body and voice. That is an amazing experience!
