What is X?

X is for ХУДОЖНИК (khu∙dozh∙nik)- the artist, craftsman. We, as artists, ascribe to be craftsmen of the highest order. Each day we work to hone our instrument in search of greater craft. For it is through the finest of craft that an artist may encounter the unknown.

X is the unknown. That which entices us, frightens us, seduces and confuses us. It is our quest for that universal Answer, but foremost a search for simply the right questions. It is that unique and deeply personal something, waiting just beneath the surface. Each day is a further exploration into that unknown; a sharpening of the artist’s seminal tools of discovery.

X is a nod to our Russian forefathers who, in their search for the unknown, gave us the basis of modern theatrical craft. We invite their spirits to cast a light over our stages and embolden the ideals for which we strive.

X is a guttural sound. The Russian letter that represents our name, is an earthy, grounded, visceral, animalistic sound - representative of the hunger we have to create.

X is both an arrival and a destination. Artists at home and abroad, who yearn to join a community of collaborative, optimistic, and like-minded craftsmen, will find a home at the XRT. Our world-class repertory theatre and conservatory program will provide an environment dedicated to supporting the search into the artistic unknown.

X is everyone. Each student. Each audience member. Each volunteer. Each and every person that helps in anyway is X. Whether through money, resources, or time, your support gives us the ability to make every production and every class a bold challenge of artistic boundaries - all in the pursuit of X.
