Artist In Residence Program
Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program
The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program at the X Repertory Theatre (XRT) and Studio XRT (S/XRT) offers young directors, playwrights, designers and dramaturges a rare opportunity to hone their craft in a practicum based training environment. While benefiting from S/XRT’s world-class training curriculum-including lectures, classes, and workshops - the AIR will frequently present work in the studio, on the main stage, while directing and collaborating in S/XRT productions. Each AIR will be partnered with a member of the XRT technical staff who will mentor them for the entirety of their training. Advanced training in each specific discipline will be conducted on a tutorial basis.
We will accept at the beginning of each incoming class at Studio XRT: 2 Directing, 2 Playwriting, 2 Dramaturgy and 2 (Rotating) Design Artists-in-Residence. Each of these positions will be fully-paid by fellowship including tuition, housing, travel expenses and weekly stipend.
Playwriting
The Playwriting Artists-in-Residence program will work in tandem with the Dramaturgical Artist-in-Residence, each committed to producing exceptional new work. In addition to studying with leading writers, playwrights will frequently participate in workshops and rehearsals producing work for the XRT, S/XRT, and individual projects. Furthermore, one spot will be reserved during XRT’s season of fully staged readings for our playwrighting AIR. This will provide our young playwrights with the opportunity for a full, mainstage debut of their work as part of the following XRT season.
Directing
The Directing Artists-in-Residence program will be conducted largely in workshop fashion. The goal of the Directing AIR program will be to provide young directors with an artistically and educationally supportive setting in which to experiment and explore. Along with their practical work assisting visiting XRT directors and directing S/XRT productions, the Directing artists-in-residence will attend classes in theatre history and theory, semiotics and performance theory, to name just a few.
Dramaturgy
The Dramaturgy Artists-in-Residence program will provide both a rigorous academic schedule and hands-on dramaturgical training unique in the American theatre culture. The AIR Dramaturgs will work on XRT mainstage productions as well as creations by Studio XRT. The dramaturgical practical work load will be balanced by a rigorous academic schedule.
Design (Lighting/Sound/Set/Costume)
The Design Artists-in-Residence program will alternate specialties each incoming year (1 designer - Lighting/Sound, 1 designer - Set/Costume). Working with their XRT mentors, our designers will be given the opportunity to design for Studio XRT productions and assist on designs for the XRT mainstage.
